Delhi won against Kolkata

A half-century from stand-in skipper Gautam Gambhir led Delhi Daredevils to the top of the Indian Premier League table with a nine-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday.
Gambhir`s measured innings of 71 not out eased Delhi to their target of 155 with one over to spare, although he did enjoy some luck after being dropped by Kolkata captain Brendon McCullum on 21 and was given not out after being caught behind just short of his half-century.
David Warner`s quickfire innings of 36 from 23 deliveries got the Daredevils off to a flying start and eased the pressure on his team-mates, allowing Gambhir and Tillakaratne Dilshan (42 not out) to ride home.
Gambhir has struggled for IPL form, but was pleased to finally register a good innings. "I am not spotting the ball well, but was happy I batted through," he said. "We discussed that someone had to finish the job, and with two batsmen set we managed to do that."
It was Kolkata`s seventh loss from nine matches, and they rued some poor fielding with a number of dropped catches and unnecessary boundaries after their batsmen set a reasonable total.
McCullum finally found form to record a speedy 35, but it was fellow opener Morne van Wyk who really sparkled with 74 from just 48 balls.
The South African hit 11 fours, but was at times starved of the strike by a struggling middle order as the innings tailed away and ended with a total that was a shade under par.

Rajasthan Royals thrash Kings XI Punjab by 78 runs

Rajasthan Royals rode on Graeme Smith and Naman Ojha's blazing fifties and debutant pacer Amit Singh's sensational bowling to trounce Kings XI Punjab by a massive 78 runs and register one of the biggest wins in the Indian Premier League in Durban on Tuesday.
Put into bat, Smith (77) and Ojha's (68) scintillating batting helped Rajasthan post the tournament's highest total -- 211 for four -- before restricting Punjab to 133 for eight.
Smith and Ojha shared a 135-run stand for the opening wicket, which is so far the biggest partnership of the event. Chasing the mammoth total, Punjab never looked in hunt and lost half their side with just 39 runs on board by the eighth over.
Skipper Yuvraj Singh (48) stood tall among the ruins and was the only Punjab batsman to put up some resistance in a contest which was unexpectedly lop-sided.

Chennai won by 78 runs

A splendid top-order batting combined with devastating bowling helped Chennai Super Kings record their third win on the rot as they outclassed Deccan Chargers by 78 runs in their action-packed Indian Premier League match here today.
Chennai top-oder fired in unison to score impressive 178 for three after opting to bat, with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52) being the top scorer.
Deccan, who came into clash with two successive defeats, never recovered from a catastrophic start and were bundled out for a paltry 100 in 14.4 overs.
Had there not been a counter-attack by Dwyane Smith (49) and Rohit Sharma (21) Deccan would have slumped to a more humiliating defeat.
With this win Chennai also toppled Deccan Chargers at the top of the points table, pushing them to number four. Chargers had no idea that a disastrous start was waiting for them as their top three batsmen -- Adam Gilchirst (0), Herschelle Gibbs (0) and VVS Laxman (0) -- went back to hut without bothering the score
From here, Smith and Sharma revived the innings with a dramatic 72-run stroke-filled partnership but could finish it off for their side.
Shadab Jakati excelled for Chennai with four wickets but it was pace duo of Albie Morkel (2/24) and Sudeep Tyagi (1/9) who set the platform for an exciting win.
The rot began with the golden duck of Gilchrist, trapped by Albie Morkel in the first ball of the innings.
Soon Gibbs joined his skipper in the dug out as strapping paceman Sudeep Tyagi disturbed his timber when the South African danced down the wicket.
Deccan were still coping with the twin-blow that Laxman began his walk back, becoming second victim of Morkel.
The scorecard was reading unbelievable figures of one run for three wickets. It could have been four wickets two runs later had anyone caught Smith off Morkel in the same over.
When everyone thought that Deccan had reached a beyond redemption stage, the spectators were served with more drama as Smith and Sharma repaired the innings with incredible hitting.
The duo put on display ruthless batting as they treated hennai bowlers with utter disdain, hitting them to every corner of the park. Smith hit five sixes and two fours in his 23-ball explosive knock.
Left-arm spinner Jakati broke the partnership by dismissing Sharma and then ran through the middle-order.
Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan (2/11) bowled in tandem with him and accounted for two batsmen.
Earlier, Chennai skipper Dhoni, who promoted himself up the order to shrug off the lean patch, struck form with an unbeaten 58 to guide his side to a decent total.
Dhoni shared a crucial 54-run partnership for the third wicket with left-handed Suresh Raina (32) after their openers laid the platform for a challenging total.
Dhoni, whose willow was silent so far, made full use of the good start give by Matthew Hayden (43) and Murali Vijay (31), as he batted through the innings.
Raina too played his part by an explosive 19-ball 32, giving enough time to Dhoni find his touch and shape innings.
Dhoni raised his first half-century of the second edition of the event in the last over when he hit RP Singh for two boundaries. His third IPL fifty came off 37-balls helped by six shots to the ropes and over the fence.
Earlier, Hayden and Vijay gave a good start to their side, putting up 61 together, though they began in contrasting fashion.
While the former Australian opener was throwing his bat at each and everything, Vijay was extremely careful with his shot selection, going for elegant drives.
By the time Chennai crossed the fifty-run mark inside six overs, Hayden had hit one six each off RP Singh, Ryan Harris and Rohit Sharma.
Hayden then welcomed Shoaib Maqsusi with two fours but his third attempt failed when he hit one straight to RP Singh.
Dhoni and Vijay, going steady, took the team to 84 at the half-way mark. Vijay opened his shoulders after the break and hit Pragyan Ojha for a six but failed when he tried to do an encore against T Suman.
After giving his team second breakthrough Suman was severely punished by new man in Raina, who hit him for two huge sixes and one hour in his next over.
Dhoni cut loose after the 15th over and hit some really powerful shots to fetch boundaries

Bangalore beat Mumbai by 9 wickets

The fight for places in the middle of the league is heating up as the 2009 season of the IPL moves towards its second half. The increased competition for semi-final berths is largely due to Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore recovering from poor starts in the tournament. Bangalore have strung together two consecutive victories, after four defeats in a row, but their push for a hat-trick of wins will be against tough opposition. The Mumbai Indians are currently third in the tournament with three wins out of six games (one washout). Bangalore have three out of seven matches and a victory at the Wanderers will take them into the top half of the league.
Bangalore scrapped hard for their victories but those wins were largely due to their bowlers who restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 139 and Punjab to 137. A misfiring top-order, the problem that led to Bangalore's terrible start to the season, still remained. Jesse Ryder and Robin Uthappa have been the biggest disappointments with the bat and they were 84 for 6 at one stage against Punjab. Bangalore's shaky batsmen will face one of their toughest tests against Mumbai's bowling attack, which is led by Lasith Malinga, the best bowler of the tournament so far, and Zaheer Khan, who found form in his last outing against Kolkata.
Mumbai are a formidable all-round team but while their bowlers are in prime form, their batsmen have slipped in the last two games. Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya have failed twice in a row after the Kolkata massacre in Port Elizabeth: Mumbai failed to chase 120 against Punjab and needed JP Duminy to rescue them from 96 for 5 against Kolkata.
