IPL Final Deccan Chargers Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

Match Date :- 24.05.2009

Deccan Chargers Crowned 2009 IPL Champions

The Deccan Chargers completed a fairytale turnaround to win the 2009 Indian Premier League with a six-run win over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Johannesburg.
The side that finished at the bottom of the table last year, and fourth this time around, posted 143 for six before restricting the Challengers to 137 for nine in a tense finale to the 59-match tournament in South Africa.
Herschelle Gibbs played the leading role with the bat before Pragyan Ojha, with three wickets, and two wickets in two balls at a crucial stage from Andrew Symonds ensured that as with both group matches between these two sides, the side batting first prevailed.
Gibbs stroked an unbeaten 53 in 48 balls with three fours and two sixes as he anchored the Deccan innings which never really got into top gear on a pitch that was playing slower than it had for yesterday's semi-final, which made quick batting tricky.
Symonds excelled again, smashing 33 in 21 balls before he pulled Anil Kumble onto his stumps. Kumble's first move had been to open the bowling himself and have Adam Gilchrist bowled with a googly for a duck but he would end up on the losing side, marooned at the non-striker's end as Robin Uthappa failed to hit the necessary boundaries as the run-rate spiralled out of control.
Rohit Sharma helped himself to a four and a six, hitting a neat and tidy 24 before Kumble hit back, finishing with four for 16, dismissing Symonds, Sharma and Yalaka Venugopal Rao (0).
Vinay Kumar, who took two for 30, including the wicket of Azhar Bilakhia for six in a superb final over, was the other bowler to get in the wickets.
The Challengers must have been confident in pursuit fo 144 and for a long while they appeared in pole position to make it. Jacques Kallis made 15 before he pulled RP Singh onto his stumps and there was to be no heroics for Manish Pandey, who made four from eight before Ojha had him caught by Gilchrist.
However, Roelof van der Merwe kept things ticking along, thumping three sixes and a four in a barnstorming innings of 32 in 21 balls to give the Challengers a much-needed boost.
His dismissal, however, sparked a mini-collapse as Rahul Dravid (9) perished, losing his leg stump to Harmeet Singh and the dangerous Ross Taylor (27) and Virat Kohli (7) were dismissed in consecutive deliveries by Symonds. Taylor holed out to Rao before Kohli was stumped by Gilchrist, a fine piece of work down the leg side.
That left the Challengers reeling and when Boucher, a man who has a long association with successful run chases at Johannesburg, steered Singh into the hands of Herschelle Gibbs for just five, the Chargers sensed victory.
With Uthappa unable to do more than one six in the penultimate over, and Praveen Kumar (2) and Vinay Kumar (8) losing their wickets, the win was sealed thanks to a nerveless final over from RP Singh.
The Challengers are left to reflect on losing a game they should have won, ruing the fact that they bowled five wides to Deccan's one, and failed to build any lasting partnerships during their chase.
That allowed the Chargers to complete their stunning turnaround from bottom of the pile to top dog in just over a year.

2nd Semifinal Chennai Super Kings Vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

Match Date :- 23.05.2009

Bangalore won by 6 wickets and gone into final

Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets to barge their way into the finals of the IndianPremier League-2, here on Saturday. Experience and youth joined forces to thwart the Chennai attack as both Rahul Dravid and Manish Pandey played important innings to take the game away from their opponents.
Pandey oozed confidence, thanks to the hundred he got in the previous game and did not let the pressure of expectations get to him. Dravid on the other hand was at his elegant best, as both of them snatched game away from Dhoni's team. At the end Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor brought home the champagne moments as the Royal Challengers team rushed on to the field to celebrate the moment. There were smiles, hugs and clenched fists as the Challengers moved into the finals of the contest. Manish Pandey received the Man of the Match award for his crucial knock of 48 runs.

The Bangalore boys were off to a hurricane start as Manish Pandey struck Morkel for consecutive boundaries. Jacques Kallis hit a forceful square cut over backward point to get off the mark. The South African star though edged a delivery from Manpreet Gony as gave Chennai their first wicket. van der Merwe was dropped by Murali in the deep but he did not make most it as the very next ball he got clean bowled by Morkel. Manish Pandey continued from where he left off in the last game and played some elegant shots through the cover region. Rahul Dravid got into the act and played a beautiful straight drive off Jakati and then slog swept him for four. The young and the old intermingled to guide the Royal Challengers towards victory. A confident Manish kept punishing the Chennai bowlers attacking them with unsparing weapons as Dravid got into the classical mode. At the end of the first ten overs the duo brought the Royal Challengers score to 82 and had manufactured a 60 run partnership.

Both of them looked in complete control at the crease until Pandey played got bowled by Jakati, attempting to play an across the line sweep shot. The Karnataka batsman missed the 50 mark by two runs. Rahul Dravid was in the zone and played a scorching square drive off Balaji for four. He looked determined to see off the proceedings. The match was set to go down the wire and it became more tense when Dravid departed after scoring valuable 44 runs. The wall tried to sweep Murali and was caught plumb in front. Raina's over proved to be expensive as Taylor and Kohli smashed two sixes a piece and closed in on the target. Dhoni banked on Muralitharan to give him a wicket but all that the spin wizard could do is stare at massive six hit by Kohli over the long on boundary. Twelve runs were required off the same number of deliveries when Jacob Oram was called into the attack, and the first ball of the over was smashed by Ross Taylor for a six. Victory now was the door step of the Royal Challengers.

Bangalore Royal Challengers won the toss and after missing the last game Matthew Hayden walked out to open the innings with Patel. Hayden was supposed to be the prized wicket for the Challengers, but it was the pocket dynamo Parthiv Patel who exploded at the start. The wicket-keeper looked in an imperious mood and smashed the bowlers all over the park. A risk-laden shot from Hayden off Kumble's bowling brought up the Chennai fifty in the sixth over. The pressure was wholely and squarely on the Royal Challengers. The duo played authentic cricketing shots and toyed with the bowling attack. The breakthrough arrived when Vinay Kumar removed Hayden for 26. The leftie holed at midwicket when he tried to play across the line and lobbed a catch to Manish Pandey in the deep.

Kallis got rid of a rampant Parthiv for 36 runs, when he trapped him in front of the wickets. Simon Taufel's finger was raised and Royal Challengers were back in the game. The disciplined bowling was now showing its impact full on as the Chennai Super Kings scored at a run rate of just 5.60 in the last five overs before the time-out. Suresh Raina hit Vinay Kumar first for a four and then for a huge six as he tried to put the foot on the pedal and increase the run rate. The Dhoni-Raina duo ran fast between the wickets and took regular two's. Raina's innings was put to end by his Uttar Pradesh team mate Praveen Kumar. The dangerous left-hander miscued a leg-cutter from Kumar and managed to give a catch to Mark Boucher, who completed the job with ease.

Albie Morkel hit a towering six of Anil Kumble over the midwicket fence. Dhoni tried to step up the run rate but his innings ended at 28 when Vinay took a well judged catch just near the boundary. Jacob Oram showed a glimpse of his stunning power when he smacked Praveen Kumar for six over long on. Oram tried to continue the pyrotechnics but scooped a catch to third man where Uthappa hung on to the ball. Albie Morkel hit the last ball of the final over for a boundary and the Chennai Super Kings finished off with 146 runs on the board. A well bowled last over costed just six runs for the Royal Challengers.

The Chennai Super Kings had clearly not been able to capitalise on the terrific start provided by opener Parthiv Patel and looked 20 runs short of a competitive target. The Royal Challengers had copped up the beating early on but hung on to pull back the game in their favour. All the bowlers did their bit in putting pressure on the Chennai batsman. Vinay Kumar ended up with two wickets. Roelf van der Merwe bowled brilliantly and gave away just 23 runs in his four overs.

IPL Semi Final 1 Deccan Chargers Vs Delhi Dare Devils

Match Date :- 22.05.2009

Deccan Chargers won by 6 wickets

Adam Gilchrist is the new Nizam and Hyderabad are a step away from being the champions of India. No, Team Delhi didn’t do anything wrong, just that they were dazzled by an old man’s frenzy that threw them out of the IPL, yet again in the semi-finals. Gilchrist went back in time, probably to March 23, 2003, when he rattled India in an opening burst to help Australia retain the World Cup. There was a sense of deja vu as Ashish Nehra ran into bowl, and Gilchrist put him out of the park with effortless ease, just as he had done some six years back. The assault, though, started with a brutal attack on one of the best bowler of the tournament, Dirk Nannes. Chasing 154, he took 21 off Nannes’ first over, employing all the shots that could have been played. Anything short was hooked or pulled mercilessly, and if the bowler dared to pitch it up, it was driven down the ground. Spinners came on as early as the fifth over, but there was no shift in momentum. Gilly swept Pragyan Ojha and when he hit three sixes in a Virender Sehwag over, the writing was on the wall. Looking clueless and dispirited, Delhi merely hoped that Gilly would play a wrong shot and get out. He edged one to get out in the 10th over, but by then the score was 102, off which the legend had contributed 85 (off 35 balls)! The rest was child’s play and with the likes of Andrew Symonds around, it took Hyderabad eight more overs to reach the target. Earlier, Gilly’s decision to play medium-pacer Ryan Harris paid off as he dismissed Gautam Gambhir and David Warner in the first over. The Hyderabad attack was looking all charged up, but Sehwag knew how important it was for him to stay at the wicket. The Delhi dasher never took a backward step and kept counter-attacking the Hyderabad attack. Standing tall, he carted Harris and RP Singh around the park and Tillekeratne Dilshan (65 off 51 balls), too, gave him excellent support. It had to be the strategy break to break Viru’s rhythm and right after the interval, the skipper missed the line of an Andrew Symonds delivery to be caught plumb in front. But Dilshan carried on with the good work that he had been doing right through the tournament, finding the gaps and keeping the scoreboard ticking. He was joined by AB de Villiers, who attacked right away and it seemed that a score of 170 was on the cards. But RP struck right when the game was drifting away from them, inducing an edge off AB, and Hyderabad were back in the hunt. Both RP and Harris were excellent in the last few overs, pitching it right up in the blockhole and varying the pace, which made it difficult for a well-set Dilshan to give the final push to the innings. But with the kind of form Gilchrist was in, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference either.
Man of the Match :- Adam Gilchrist
Gilchrist gave us no chance: Sehwag ( Times of India )
When Adam Gilchrist gets going there's very little anybody can do and Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag admitted as much when he said they were done in by the Deccan Chargers skipper's hurricane knock. Gilchrist plundered 85 runs from 35 balls with 10 boundaries and five sixes that helped Deccan defeat Delhi by six wickets and storm into the final of the Indian Premier League. "The way Gilchrist batted we had no chance," Sehwag conceded at the post-match ceremony. "The bowlers had no clue. It wasn't our day," lamented the Delhi Daredevils skipper. Delhi fought back after losing two wickets in the very first over to post 153 for eight. "I thought 153 was a defendable total but the way Gilchrist batted, we could do very little. It was Gilchrist's day," said Sehwag. The man of the moment hadn't played for over a year before the IPL but Gilchrist showed no signs of rustiness. "It was great to come back after a year and play well," said Gilchrist. Asked about his hurricane knock, Gilchrist said, "I just wanted to stay on and try and get close to their run rate and if possible pull ahead. Wanted to put them under a bit of pressure." Gilchrist praised the team's bowlers for restricting Delhi to 153. "The guys did well to restrict them to 150," he said. Last year, they finished bottom of the table and now they are just a win away from the title and Gilchrist admitted that having come this far, they would be fancying their chances. "You can always fancy our chances in Twenty20 cricket. It's a two-horse race now and we know our target," said Gilchrist.

Bangalore Royal Challengers Vs Deccan Chargers

Match date :-21.05.2009

Bangalore won by 12 runs
.
Royal challengers banaglore won their fourth consecutive game as they beat Deccan Chargers by 12 runs, here on Thursday. Bangalore bowlers restricted the Deccan batsman to just 158 in their full quota of overs, to bring home victory for the side.
The star of the show was young Manish Pandey who earlier in the day played a heart-warming innings of 114 runs and remained unbeaten till the end. Sent out to open with Jacques Kallis, the Karnataka batsman made most of the opportunity and smashed his maiden hundred in the Indian Premier League. Pandey not only hit powerful shots but embellished his innings with some graceful cover drives to the fence and became the first Indian to make a hundred in a twenty-twenty game. The lad from Bangalore received the Man of the Match award for his effort with the willow

Buoyed by a cracking hundred from Manish Pandey, the Royal Challengers set about the task of defending the target. Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs provided a fiery start to the innings. The duo took to Praveen Kumar and hit him for 22 runs. The opening partnership brought up the Deccan fifty in no time, but couldn't flourish on as Balachandra Akhil removed Adam Gilchrist for 15 runs. Gilly's dismissal checked the Deccan chargers run rate somewhat, though Herschelle Gibbs carried on to make fifty in 32 deliveries. The blistering knock included three hits to the fence and four sensational sixes.

Andrew Symonds walked in after T Suman gave a catch to van der Merwe at cover. He along with Gibbs put forth a 25-run partnership until the explosive South African went for a pull off an Akhil delivery and 'man of the moment' Manish Pandey held on to the catch at long on. Gibbs went for 60 and Symonds followed him soon as he played an across the line slog-sweep and was clean bowled by van der Merwe . The Royal Challengers looked on the top after the removal of two big players. However, with Rohit Sharma still batting, the danger was not yet over. Venugopal Rao sacrificed his wicket in a needless run-out. Rao's sacrifice though was squandered away when Sharma holed out in the deep to Virat Kohli. Anil Kumble's low full-toss doing the job this time.
Bangalore Royal Challengers won the toss and Anil Kumble decided to put runs on the board first up. Manish Pandey was sent out to open along with veteran Jacques Kallis. The hero of the last match could not last long as he flicked RP's delivery straight into the hands of Pragyan Ohja at short square leg. Singh though was not generous to his bowling partner Ryan Harris, when he dropped Pandey at third man. The batsman rubbed salt into the wound by smashing Harris for a four in the next ball. Roelf van der Merwe looked restless on the crease as he tried to slog almost every ball towards the boundary. The South African allrounder huffed-puffed and hit Ojha for a six over midwicket. Manish Pandey at the other played with a sense of freedom and sandwiched some classy shots inbetween some mis-timed slog hits. At the stroke of the strategy break Gilchrist stumped van Der Merwe for 23 and the Royal Challengers ended the first ten overs with 64 runs in the bank.

After the break Pandey unfurled his strokes and hit Suman for two smooth sixes that came of consecutive balls. Pandey looked comfortable and at complete ease in the middle and brought up his fifty in 36 deliveries. Bangalore accelerated their run-rate on the back of his stroke-play as he continued to smash both the fast bowlers and the spinners alike. The hundred was up for the Royal Challengers in the fourteenth over. Pandey not only hit the ball had but had the intelligence to use the fast bowler's pace as he glided a delivery from Jaskaran Singh through the third man boundary for four runs. Jaskaran's over was further spoiled when the Banglorean cleared his left leg and smashed Singh for a massive six over the long on boundary. A bad over became more worse as Pandey got a thick edge that flew to the third man boundary again for a lucky four. The Deccan attack bowled well but the Karnataka batsman still came up on the top and dominated them heavily.

Manish Pandey's batting hurt Deccan Chargers and his dropped catch early on proved to be costly as the youngster notched his first IPL hundred and the second one of the series itself. Pandey's efforts with bat was enthusiastically cheered by his team members. The 100 came up in just 68 balls. RP Singh leaked more runs in his final over when Virat Kohli dug into him as he smashed two massive sixes, Pandey also had fun smacking one for his own, straight over RP's head. The last over cost the Chargers a whopping 23 runs as the Royal Challengers posted a healthy score of 170 runs. Manish Pandey's scintillating stroke-play fetched him 114 runs and he remained unbeaten in the end.

Delhi Dare Devils VS Mumbai Indians

Match date :- 21.05.2009
Delhi won by 4 wickets

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir marked their return to form with blistering knocks as Delhi Daredevils prepared for the IPL semifinals with a comfortable four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in their last league match here on Thursday.
After restricting Mumbai Indians to 165 for eight, Sehwag cracked 27-ball 50 while Gambhir blasted 47 off 38 balls to guide their team to victory at Supersports park.
The Daredevils, who had already assured themselves of a berth in the semifinals, could have won with a bigger margin had they not lost four wickets in quick succession to make it a little tight in the end.
Chasing 166 to win, Delhi had a rollicking start with opener David Warner (15) and Gambhir clobbering the pacers all over the park, which included a six off Dhawal Kulkarni over long on by Warner.
However, the Australian was sent packing by Kulkarni when he mishit a raising delivery only to lob it to Ashraful.
Skipper Virender Sehwag then joined Gambhir in the middle and the duo recreated their old magic by stitching together a 68-run partership for the second wicket to help Delhi score fifty in 5.2 overs and then reached 104 in 11 overs.
Out of form, Sehwag found his form back and treated the bowlers with disdain. Kulkarni was at his receiving end in the sixth over when he dispatched the lanky pacer three times across the boundary to accumulate 14 runs.
In the 10th over, Sehwag picked up his first six off Abhishek Nayar and followed it up with two more fours to score 16 runs off the over.
Gambhir, meanwhile, kept the scoreboard ticking before his mishit skier was caught by Ashraful at third man in the 12th over.
After cruising along comfortably at 104 for one at one stage, Delhi lost the wickets of Tillakaratne Dilshan (24) and Sehwag in successive deliveries in the 15th over to slump to 144 for four.
Two overs later, inform AB De Villiers (6) and Rajat Bhatia (2) returned to the hut to reduce Delhi to 153 for six with Harbahjan Singh capturing all the four wickets giving away only 17 runs.
But by then it was too late as Amit Mishra picked up the winning run to take his team home in 17.3 overs.
Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane cracked a brisk 41-ball 56, while Sachin Tendulkar hit a patient 46 as Mumbai Indians posted a competitive 165 for eight.
Rahane stitched together a 54-ball 73-run partnership with Tendulkar for the fourth wicket to anchor the Mumbai Indians innings.
Rahane's innings was studded with five boundaries and two hits over the fence.
Mumbai made a shaky start, losing three quick wickets -- Sanath Jayasuriya (0), JP Duminy (9) and Mohammad Ashraful (2) -- as they stuttered to 31 for 3 in the first six overs.
Australian Dirk Nannes in his first legal delivery in the first over trapped Jayasuriya leg before wicket to put Mumbai on the back foot.
Tendulkar then played two beautiful looking shots at square leg and mid-off to step up the tempo, while new man Duminy also got into the act, greeting Nannes with a flashy hook and a straight drive for successive boundaries.
However, Nannes had the last laugh as he sent him packing of the next ball, when Duminy nicked his away swinging delivery only to be caught behind by Dinesh Karthik. Playing his first match in the IPL, Bangladesh import Ashraful also didn't last long and was sent back into the hut by Pradeep Sangwan in his first over.
Tendulkar and Rahane then steadied the ship and were involved in some copybook shots and quick singles to bring up the fifty in 7.3 overs and then the hundred in 13 overs.
But three balls later, all-rounder Rajat Bhatia brought Delhi back into the game, as he got rid off Tendulkar. Trying to make room for himself, Tendulkar found his furniture shattered by Bhatia's straight delivery.
However, Rahane kept the scoreboard ticking and sent Amit Mishra across mid-wicket for a four and then brought up the first six of the Mumbai innings in the 17th over with a flashy strike over extra-cover.
In the next over, Rahane picked up the second six off Aavishkar Salvi. Pinal Shah (12), Harbhajan Singh (12) also played some useful shots in the end to help Mumbai across the 150 mark.

Chennai Super kings Vs KXI Punjab

Match date :- 20.05.2009

Chennai super kings won by 24 runs

Muttiah Muralalitharan-led spin department sizzled in the tricky Kingsmead conditions as Chennai Super Kings beat XI Punjab by 24-runs in a low-scoring match to virtually knock the Yuvraj Singh-led side out of the Indian Premier League.
Muralitharan (2/8), R Ashwin (2/13) and Suresh Raina (2/17) spun their web around Punjab batsmen and saved the day for Chennai as Yuvraj men's found runs hard to come by in the low and slow conditions and could only manage 92 for eight in their alloted 20 overs.
Left-arm pacer Thilan Thushara, playing his first match of the tournament, also picked up two wickets for 28 runs.
With this win Chennai became the second team after Delhi Daredevils to have secured their semifinal spot with 17 points from 14 matches.
On the other hand, Punjab with 14 points in their kitty desperately needed to win today's match to assure themselves of a semifinal spot.
Yuvraj's men still have a slim chance to make it to the last four but their negative net run rate may work against them and they will be hoping for a miracle to happen in the last league match between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Earlier, S Sreesanth and Irfan Pathan snapped two wickets each as Kings XI Punjab restricted formidable Chennai Super Kings to a paltry 116 for nine.
Kings XI's run chase started on disastrous note as they lost dangerous Sunny Sohal early in the second over, caught by Parthiv Patel off Thushara.
Simon Katich was next to depart clean bowled behind his legs by Muralitharan to send Punjab in a spot of bother at 32/2 after six overs.
As expected Punjab batsmen found scoring tough against Chennai spinners. Their struggle can be ascertained from the fact that they score just 13 runs in the last four over before the strategic timeout.
Needing 72 off 54 deliveries, willy Muralitharan struck again when he induced an edge from Luke Pomersbach (26 off 32) that Raina pounced sharply at the first slip to see the Sri Lankan end his spell with superb figures of 4-0-8-2.
Raina then ended Yuvraj's struggle at the middle, disturbing the Punjab skipper's stumps in the very next over to give his side the upper hand in the contest.
Ashwin drived the final nail in Punjab's coffin picking up two wickets in the 16th over. He first scalped Kumar Sangakkara with a smart catch off his own bowling and then trapped Wilkin Mota in front of the stumps.
Brett Lee was the next to go caught in the deep by Oram off Raina and then Irfan Pathan (14 off 12) followed in search of big hits caught by Oram of Thushara.
Earlier, Parthiv Patel (32 off 23 balls) and George Bailey (15) got Chennai of to a flying start scoring 35 runs in the first four overs.
Both Patel and Bailey struck a boundary each in the second over to pick 11 runs off Irfan Pathan (2/32).
Patel was the aggressive among the two and was particularly severe on Pathan. The diminutive left-hander added further misery for Pathan when he clobbered him for a four and a six over midwicket in his next over.
It took Yuvraj Singh's magic on the field to break the dangerous looking partnership. The Punjab skipper came up with a direct hit from mid-off to catch Bailey short of the crease.
The big breakthrough came in the seventh over when Ramesh Powar (1/19) bowled Patel to put brakes on Chennai scoring.
But it was Sreesanth (2/23) who turned the fortunes in Punjab's favour, inflicting twin blows just before the strategy break getting the important wickets of S Badrinath and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a span of three balls.
The maverick pacer first fooled Bardrinath, and then cleaned up Dhoni's timber a ball later with a gem of an inswinger with Chennai scoreboard reading 70/4 at the halfway.
Medium pacer Wilkin Mota (1/8) compounded further misery for Chennai when he got Suresh Raina (20 off 21) before Piyush Chawla (1/13) cleaning up Manpreet Gony in the next over.
Jacob Oram (17 off 21) tried hard to resurrect the Chennai innings but ultimately feel in search of quick runs.
Brief score:
Chennai Super Kings: 116 for 9 wickets in 20 overs (P Patel 32, S Raina 20; I Pathan 2/32, S Sreesanth 2/23).
Kings XI Punjab: 92 for 8 wickets in 20 overs (L Pomersbach 26, I Pathan 14; M Muralitharan 2/8, S Raina 2/17).

Rajasthan Royals Vs Kolkata Knight Riders

Match date :- 20.05.2009

Kolkata won against Rajasthan

Defending champions Rajasthan Royals were knocked out of the Indian premier League after Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off an upset four-wicket victory in a low-scoring thriller on Wednesday.
After restricting Royals to a modest 101 for nine, the Knight Riders recovered from a stunning top-order collapse to romp home with three balls to spare in a nerve-wracking contest, which went down to the wire at the Kingsmead.
All-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla (Man of the Match) turned out to be the hero for the Knight Riders with an unbeaten 48 off 46 balls while paceman Charl Langeveltd (3/15) did the damage with the ball to ensure that his team finished the tournament on a winning note.
Rajasthan, who desperately needed a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive, paid a heavy price for a poor batting display which eventually saw them crashing out of the tournament. Naman Ojha top scored with 22.
The Royals thus finished their IPL II engagements with 13 points from 14 matches while Kolkata, who were out of the reckoning, completed their engagements with 7 points.
The Kolkata Knight Riders run chase began on a disastrous note as they lost five wickets for just 37 runs by the first 10 overs with most of their experienced batsmen in the hut.
The left-handed Sourav Ganguly (0) was the first to depart being dismissed by Munaf Patel while captain Brendon McCullum (9) joined him in the pavilion with young Amit Singh taking his wicket. The in-form Brad Hodge (6), Yashpal Singh (6) and David Hussey (9) fell in quick succession to leave Kolkata struggling at 37 for five.
A mix-up which resulted in the run out of Shoaib Shaikh immediately after the strategy break compounded the misery for the Knight Riders.
But Shukla and Ajit Agarkar put on a crucial unbeaten 57-run partnership to steer the team home much to the relief of his teammates.
Earlier, the contest got off to a dramatic start with Rajasthan Royals clobbering Hodge for as many as 22 runs in the very first over with the diminutive opener Naman Ojha belting three sixes to set the tempo for his team.
But the script changed very swiftly for the defending champions as South African paceman Charl Langeveldt, playing his first match in the tournament, struck in his very first ball by scalping opener Rob Quiney (1).
Quiney tried to pull the ball and only managed to top edge it to wicket keeper Shoaib Shaikh, who latched on to a simple catch.
After the flourishing opening over, Rajasthan Royals suddenly found themselves in the pit as they lost Ojha (22), Swapnil Asnodkar and Johan Botha (8) in quick succession to be left tottering at 42 for four by the end of the fifth over. While Ojha was done in by a short pitched delivery by Langeveldt, Asnodkar was needlessly run out trying to go for a non-existent run.
Botha was promoted in the batting order to steady the rocking ship but he also could not survive long, being cleaned up by Ajit Agarkar in his very first ball.
With wickets tumbling at regular intervals, the scoring rate dropped down quite a bit as Niraj Patel and Yusuf Pathan were quite content in dropping anchor and repairing the early damage.
Langaveltd came back for his second spell and snapped up his third wicket by getting rid of Patel, who completely mistimed his shot and Sourav Ganguly held on to a well-judged catch just before the strategy break.
The Royals suffered a huge blow immediately after the break when dangerman Pathan (9) was run out, effectively shattering the team's hopes of piling up a big total.
A few balls later, the defending champions suffered another jolt when Tyron Henderson, reputed to be a big hitter, was run out off a direct hit from David Hussey.
Captain Shane Warne joined the action with his team at a precarious 62 for seven and it was important for his team to play out the 20 overs and take the score to the 100-run mark.

Chennai Super Kings Vs Kolkata Knight Riders

Match date :- 18.05.2009
Kolkata won against chennai by 7 wickets

A brilliant 81 by captain Brendon McCullum and an equally well-compiled 71 not out by Brad Hodge enabled Kolkata Knight Riders beat Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets in their Indian Premier League match at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Monday.
Chasing an improbable 189 to win, KKR romped home off the last ball, when Wridhimann Saha chipped it over cover for a single.
It was only the Kolkata team's second win in this year's competition against 10 defeats.
The Kolkata captain's superlative innings came off just 48 balls (11x4, 3x6) while Hodge's knock came off 44 balls (4x4, 4x6). The latter was named man-of-the-match.
Earlier, an aggressive 52 by Suresh Raina , and his 75-run third wicket partnership with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (40 not out), helped Chennai post a formidable 188 for three.
Raina faced only 37 balls during his knock and had three hits to the fence and three big ones over it.
Going into the match Chennai had witnessed their run of five-successive wins ended by Royal Challengers Bangalore in Durban. But, to their credit, they responded to that defeat by beating Mumbai Indians in Port Elizabeth, the result downing curtains for Sachin Tendulkar's side in the competition. However, they suffered their fifth defeat in the tournament on Monday.
The previous game between the two teams in Cape Town was washed out. This one though was a wash-out only for Chennai.
Chennai innings:
M S Dhoni won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bat first on a wicket that was conducive for the same.
And both his openers, Parthiv Patel (25/19) and George Bailey (30/26), playing in his first match in place of the injured Matthew Hayden vindicated the captain's decision by giving their side a splendid start.
It is not easy to replace a batsman who holds the Orange cap -- for the most runs in the tournament -- and make an impact. But the 26-year-old Bailey, who plays for the Tasmanian Tigers back in Australia did precisely that, grabbing his maiden opportunity with both hands.
The Australian began well by dispatching the fourth ball (of Ashok Dinda he faced through to the square leg boundary.
Parthiv, who was out for a golden duck in the last match against Mumbai, also started on a confident note.
The Gujarat southpaw hit two boundaries in the second over by Anureet Singh, the first ball of the over past mid-off, and glanced the last ball past the fine leg fielder.
Bailey was further assertive in Dinda's second over (KKR's third), hitting successive boundaries, the first a pull over midwicket and the second behind backward point.
Ajit replaced Anureet and Bailey greeted him by hitting him over extra cover for a four.
Chennai had raced to 35 after four overs and that prompted Kolkata skipper Brendon McCullum to introduce spin inside the Powerplay.
However, Parthiv slammed Murali Kartik's first ball back past mid-on for his third boundary.
The diminutive batsman hit another boundary off Brad Hodge and that shot brought in the 50-run partnership for the opening wicket, Chennai racing to 54 without loss in six overs.
But Kolkata did not have to wait long to secure their opening breakthrough, Parthiv getting run-out from a direct hit by Laxmi Ratan Shukla in the second ball of the seventh over.
And in the final over before the strategic time out, Kolkata effected yet another run-out, this time Bailey, to ensure they were back in the hunt going into the break having reduced Chennai to 83 for two.
Chennai came back strong after resumption, with Suresh Raina assuming the role of the aggressor. The UP left-hander first dispatched Ajantha Mendis to the midwicket fence and then cut Kartik behind square on the off side to step up the gear.
Dhhoni joined the party, clubbing David Hussey over long-off for a maximum, and the first of this Chennai innings.
The captain was fortunate to survive two let-offs by the Kolkata fielders, Agarkar first failing to latch on to a tough chance from his own bowling (the ball went to the fence) and two balls later Kartik spurned an easy chance at midwicket.
Chennai made Kolkata pay heavily for their on-the-field blemishes. Raina smashed Mendis for successive sixes in the 16th over, the first over midwicket and the second over mid-on. That over cost Kolkata 17 runs.
Another maximum over midwicket off Dinda helped Raina complete his second half-century of the tournament.
Raina, with 394 runs so far, is Chennai's second highest scorer (after Hayden, 546) but had managed only one half-century (98) in 11 games going into the match.
Moreover, he aggregated just 48 runs in his last three innings and was guilty of losing his wicket at crucial junctures.
However, this innings made up for all his blemishes.
But Raina departed immediately after, a thick outside edge from his blade going straight to Shukla at backward point.
A few more lusty blows from Dhoni and Albie Morkel (21/10) ensured the Chennai innings didn't lose any momentum following the dismissal and, instead, compounded Kolkata's misery.
The South African southpaw, in particular, was impressive. He hit successive sixes of Agarkar in the final over, the first over square leg and the second straight over the bowler's head, and followed it up with a boundary past the gully fielder.
Agarkar's final over cost Kolkata 19 runs and ensured their chase will be an uphill task.
Kolkata innings:
The Kolkata innings began on a positive note, McCullum hitting successive boundaries of Morkel's first over.
After a quite second over (by Sudeep Tyagi), McCullum stepped up gear, helping his side take 16 runs in the third.
The New Zealand batsman first dispatched Morkel over the extra cover boundary for maximum and followed it up with successive boundaries, the first past the mid-off fielder and the second over the square leg fieldsman.
The Kolkata captain kept up the momentum by pulling Tyagi in front of square for another boundary.
However, the introduction of Muttiah into the attack in the fifth over brought about the dismissal of Sourav (4/14).
The former Kolkata captain, who never looked comfortable during his innings, got an inside edge that hit his leg stump and dislodged the bails.
But McCullum did not let Chennai capitalize on their early breakthrough; taking a whopping 22 runs of the sixth over (Tyagi's third).
The Kiwi, after defending Tyagi's first ball, hit four successive boundaries -- to cover point, fine leg, midwicket and extra cover respectively.
The fourth boundary brought up the Kolkata 50, 45 of those coming from McCullum's blade. The captain went a step ahead off the last ball, pulling it over the fine leg fence for maximum.
The six also helped him complete his second half-century in the tournament -- after his 84 not out against Bangalore on the same ground -- and he achieved it off just 21 deliveries.
McCullum's relentless aggression -- Kolkata were 56 for one after the Powerplay period (six overs) -- caught the Chennai bowlers and fielders completely off guard and they looked bewildered.
Hodge smashed straight past Shadab Jakati's head for maximum and McCullum had two boundaries off Muralitharan to ensure Kolkata went into the strategic time-out comfortably placed at 83 for one.
After resumption, it was Hodge who took over from McCullum, getting two boundaries off Raina and smashing Jakati over long-on for another maximum.
McCullum also had a maximum off Jakati, but the bowler had the last laugh when one of his deliveries hit the New Zealander's stumps and dislodged it.
The Kolkata captain put on 90 runs in just 56 balls for the second wicket with Hodge.
Hussey (3/2) was unnecessarily run out.
But in came Wridhimann Saha (25/13) and he eased the pressure by smashing Laxmipathy Balaji first for a boundary and then clearing the midwicket fence for a maximum.
Hodge kept up the tempo, smashing Morkel for successive boundaries in the 18th over, the first of which brought about his third half century.
The Australian, Kolkata's highest scorer in the tournament with 359 runs (11 games), went ballistic in the penultimate over, smashing two sixes of Balaji, the first over long off and the second over the bowler's head.
Balaji's over cost Chennai 19 runs and ensured only six runs were required of the final over.
The final over, by Raina, had some tense moments.
However, Hodge and Saha, who put on 56 runs for the fourth wicket, eventually took their team home.

Delhi Dare Devils Vs Rajasthan Royals

Match date :- 16.05. 2009
Delhi won against Rajasthan

Defending champions Rajasthan Royals' hopes of making the semi-finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) suffered a blow Sunday with their 14-run loss to Delhi Daredevils here.
Delhi, who are already through to the semifinals, came up with yet another clinical fare to lead the standings with 18 points, three clear of second placed Chennai Super Kings, with two matches in hand.
The road to the semifinals looks tough for Rajasthan Royals as they have 13 points from 13 matches and are now lying at fifth place. A win here would have boosted them to third place as in the earlier match Sunday, Kings XI Punjab defeated Deccan Chargers to stay in the top mix.
Chasing 151, Rajasthan Royals managed only 136 for nine with Amit Mishra taking three wickets.
Daredevils' innings revolved around AB devilliers' brilliant unbeaten 79 off 55 balls, studded with eight fours and a six.
Royals top-order once again failed with their top three batsmen back in the dugout in the first seven overs with only 24 runs on the board. Johan Botha (37) and Ravindra Jadeja (24) added 55 runs to steady the innings. Aavishkar Salvi got the breakthrough, dismissing Jadeja in the 13th over to trigger a lower order collapse.
Mishra then took three wickets, two off successive deliveries, to cripple the middle-order.
Danger man Yusuf Pathan was taken out by Farveez Mahroof.
Munaf Patel made a bold attempt, hitting three succesive boundaries in the last over with 28 required, but it came too late.
Earlier, with Daredevils electing to bat, De Villiers and Tillakaratne Dilshan added 87 runs for the third wicker after the fall of skipper Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.
Munaf Patel (2-39) bowled a tight spell upfront to dismiss both the openers in one over.
He stuck onto a spectacular one-handed catch off his own bowling to remove Gambhir and then trapped Sehwag in front in the third over.
Delhi were tottering at 15 for two when Daredevils' most reliable pair - De Villers and Dilshan - came together to revive the innings.
Rajasthan bowlers kept it tight, but a late flurry of shots dashed their hopes of restricting Daredvils to a lower score.
Dilshan departed in the 17th over, bowled by Johan Botha, before Munaf was hammered for 25 runs in the penultimate over, with De Villiers and Dinesh Karthik (23) hitting him for two sixes and two fours.

Deccan Chargers Vs Kolkata Knight Riders

Match date :- 16.05.2009
Deccan won by 6 wickets

Deccan Chargers took a stride towards reserving their semi-final berth as they pipped Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in a
Put into bat first, Kolkata scored a competitive 160 for five, built largely around 17-ball 43 by David Hussey and Brad Hodge's sedate 41-ball 48, but Deccan Chargers overwhelmed the target in the last ball. Adam Gilchrist's 31-ball 43 gave the Deccans good start, but the Hyderabad side suffered some mid-innings slump before Rohit Sharma's 13-ball 32 guided them to the win. With 14 runs needed from last four balls, Sharma hit a four off Mortaza and then hit another for maximum to wrap up the issue as they reached 166 in 20 overs. Earlier, Kolkata openers Brenden McCullum and Sourav Ganguly were never at ease as the Deccan's new-ball pair of Australian Ryan Harris and RP Singh extracted sharp bounce from the pitch that was otherwise looking a good batting track. Harris inflicted first blow to Kolkata side as skipper McCullum (20), who was earlier dropped by Herchelle Gibbs, failed to negotiate a rising delivery as Tirumalsetti Suman ran backward to pouch a well-judged catch. Ganguly then paired up with Australian Hodge but Andrew Symond's seam-up deliveries and paceman Harmeet Singh's good-length bowling restricted the batsmen duo from stepping on the accelerator. Deccan fielders also showed some fine athleticism on the ground to stop several fence-bound shots, which only added to the frustration of the batsmen as the first 10 overs yielded only 50 runs. Ganguly cracked a fine boundary in second delivery after the strategy break off Harmeet Singh and then struck another off Pragyan Ojha in the next over. With the bowlers maintaining stifling line and length, Ganguly and Hodge had to rely heavily on running between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking. Kolkata lost their second wicket when Ganguly (33 off 41), who added 58 runs with Hodge, decided to go after Rohit Sharma but his ambitious shot found Harris at the long-off region. Hodge then decided to open his hands as he struck a four off Sharma and hit another off Ojha in the next over, with new batsman David Hussey also smiting the left-arm spinner into the stand. Hodge, who adorned his innings with five boundaries, had to depart after falling prey to Harris in the 18th over. However, Hussey then lit up the stadium with his batting pyrotechniques to guide the Kolkata side cross 150-run mark which was looking an impossible task at one point of time. From the 19th over off Harmeet Singh, Hussey took 28 runs with the help of two boundaries and as many sixers, before Adam Gilchrist found him short off crease in the next over. Chasing 161, Deccan started on an attacking note with Gilchrist sending pacer Ishant Sharma across the rope in the first over, before the left-hander cracked two consecutive sixers off Kolkata's Bangladeshi import Mashrafe Mortaza in the next over. Gilchrist and Protea Herchelle Gibbs handled the pacers duo without much difficulties and amassed 41 runs off first five overs. Hodge broke the 68-run partnership when he sent Gilchrist who was looking dangerous, packing as substitute Laxmi Ratan Shukla dived forward to take a nice catch. Deccan suffered their second loss in the form of Gibbs (28), who went after left-arm spinner Murali Karthik but Hussey took a comfortable catch at deep mid-wicket region. Australian Andrew Symonds and Suman (31) then added 31 runs, before the latter ran himself out in 17th over. Deccan suffered a huge blow when Mortaza's direct throw found Symonds (13), who was in good touch indeed, short off the crease, sending supporters to celebration, but Rohit Sharma later saved the blushes of Deccan supporters.

KXIPunjab Vs Delhi dare devils

Match date :- 15.05.2009
Punjab won against delhi

Kings XI Punjab beat Delhi Daredevils by six wickets in their Indian Premier League match at the OUTsurance Oval in Bloemfontein on Friday.
Chasing a modest 121 to keep their chances alive in the competition, Punjab won with five balls to spare.
Kumar Sangakkara made a patient 43 not out of 47 deliveries ((6x4) to ensure Punjab ease past the Delhi total after an early wobble.
Going into the match, Delhi was virtually assured of a last fourth berth 9they still top the table).
Virender Sehwag's team had won eight of their 10 matches, including their last four, and had only come up short against Chennai and Rajasthan.
Moreover, they had an advantage over the other teams in that they have played a match less.
Punjab, on the other hand, was finding it increasingly difficult to match their semi-final showing of the inaugural season. Their win moved them up to sixth in the table.
However, they can ill afford to lose any of their two remaining games and even if they win both of them they aren't assured of the same.
Delhi thrashed Punjab by 10 wickets in a rained-curtailed match at Newlands when the teams first met in the tournament. Another win for Delhi would have meant Punjab's tournament is over. Fortunately for them, that didn't happen.
Earlier, an excellent bowling effort, particularly from Brett Lee (4-1-15-3), helped Kings XI Punjab restrict the table toppers to a paltry 120 for nine.
The extent of the dominance of the Punjab bowlers over the Delhi batsmen can be judged from the fact that the final five overs yielded only 23 runs (for Delhi) and as many as five wickets (for Punjab).
Delhi innings:
Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh won the toss and invited Delhi to bat first.
Captain Sehwag (9/8) blasted Lee's fourth ball through the covers for a boundary and repeated the shot with the same result in the second ball of the Aussie's second over.
But Lee had the last laugh.
The fast bowler's persistence with the short ball aimed at Sehwag's rib cage finally unsettled the batsman and he edged one to Kumar Sangakkara behind the stumps.
In the next over Gautam Gambhir (8/11) was brilliantly run out by Wilkin Mota-Sangakkara combine to justify Yuvraj's decision to field.
The famed opening duo (of Gambhir and Sehwag) have flattered to deceive in this tournament and Friday's failure was yet another addition to their disappointing efforts in the tournament.
S Sreesanth, who had been at the receiving end in his last few matches, came in to bowl in the final over before Powerplay and his first over cost Punjab 11 runs, with both Tillekeratnee Dilshan (10/19) and AB de Villiers (11/11) helping themselves with a boundary each.
However, the Kerala seamer came back with a vengeance, first having the South Africa caught by Yuvraj at mid-on in his second over and then repeating the feat in his third, this time accounting for the Sri Lankan.
Delhi went into the strategic time-out in deep trouble with just 52 runs on board and with four of their top batsmen back in the pavilion.
As the game resumed, Mithun Manhas and Dinesh Karthik began rebuilding the Delhi innings and their strategy was the conventional one – to combine caution with aggression.
So while the first over after the break yielded 10, the 14th over, bowled by Yuvraj, helped Delhi break free.
Karthik cleared the midwicket fence for the maximum – the first and only of Delhi's innings – and some poor fielding ensured that over cost Punjab 14 runs.
The next over by Piyush Chawla went for 12, with Manhas getting the ball past the extra cover fielder for a boundary.
Yuvraj was forced to hand the ball to Mota, after his expensive over, and the move worked to his advantage.
The fifth wicket partnership for Delhi read exactly 50 runs when Manhas (26/25) hit straight to Sunny Sohal at deep midwicket. The Delhi innings was delicately poised at 104 for five after 16 overs.
And Lee added to their woes with a wicket-maiden in the 17th over, frustrating Farveez Maharoof (3/8), playing in his first match of the season, for the first five balls with clever variation of pace before knocking out his middle stump with a length ball.
Daniel Vettori (1/2), also back in the side after a sabbatical, fell in the final ball of the next over by Irfan, caught by Sohal at mid-off.
Rajat Bhatia (0/1) skied to Chawla at third man in the first ball of the penultimate over to ensure two things: first he becomes yet another addition to the tournament's growing list of golden ducks and secondly, Lee getting his third wicket.
Karthik's (32/29) resilience came to an end in the final over when Irfan (4-0-22-2) had him caught by Mota at long on.
Punjab innings:
The Punjab reply started on an outstanding note – Simon Katich (20/10) smashing 20 runs of the second over bowled by Pradeep Sangwan.
The Australian southpaw two boundaries, one over backward point and one over point before finishing the over clearing the third man for a maximum.
However, the Punjab batting hit a roadblock soon after.
Maharoof struck of his first ball, having Katich caught behind by Karthik.
Luke Pomersbach smashed two boundaries in the same over to keep pace from Punjab. But Ashish Nehra cleaned up Sohal (3/12) in the first ball of the next over. Three balls later the left-armer, who played for Mumbai in the inaugural season, was unfortunate to witness Yuvraj dropped by Gambhir at first slip when the Punjab captain was yet to open his account.
Maharoof had Pomersbach (9/8) caught by de Villiers at first slip in the final Powerplay over to reduce Punjab to 37 for three.
Yuvraj and Sangakkara then started doing for Punjab what the Kathik-Manhas combine had done for Delhi.
The duo ensured Punjab went into the break without any further damage, at 50 for three, requiring 71 runs of their final 10 overs.
Sangakkara stepped up the pedal after resumption, hitting Bhatia for successive boundaries and also dispatching Dilshan to the fence.
With the Sri Lankan freeing his arms, runs came quickly and the total improved to 86 for three after 15 overs.
But just when the 53-run fourth wicket partnership threatened to take the match out of Delhi's reach, Yuvraj (18/31), who had looked out of sorts throughout his stay, hit a Sangwan delivery straight to Sehwag at backward point.
However, it was Sangwan who made things simpler for Punjab. The young bowler, who had had to ensure some punishment from the Punjab batsmen early on, suffered again when Irfan hit him for two maximums in his final over, one over midwicket and the other over the square leg boundary.
And when Irfan hoisted Maharoof for another maximum wide of long on it was all over.
It was befitting that Sangakkara, who had anchored the innings to perfection, hit the winning boundary, through the covers of Vettori.

Bangalore win by 2 wickets

Bangalore Royal Challengers kept themselves in contention for a semi-final berth in the Indian Premier League with a thrilling two-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at Kingsmead on Thursday.
With the win, Royal Challengers now have 12 points with two more matches in hand. Super Kings remain at the second position with 13 points.
Winning the toss and deciding to bat, Chennai were bundled out for lowly 129 in 19.4 overs with Matthew Hayden (60) doing bulk of the scoring. Challengers skipper Anil Kumble (2-12) led a disciplined bowling attack to restrict Royal Challengers.
Bangalore survived a top-order collapsed through Ross Taylor (46) and Virat Kohli (38) before Praveen Kumar (12 not out) and Vinay Kumar (6 not out) bailed them out in tense last two overs.
With five runs required in last over, Bangalore reached the target with two balls to spare.
Bangalore were off to a disastrous start, losing Jacques Kallis for a duck in the second ball of the match when he was trapped in front by Albie Morkel. They were reduced to 12 for two in the next over when Morkel struck again, the batsman this time being Rahul Dravid. Robin Uthappa's departure in the fifth over left Bangalore tottering for 30-3.
But Kohli and Taylor joined forces for 56-run partnership and brought Bangalore back in the match.
Super Kings sensed an opening with the departure of Kohli in the 15th over and Mark Boucher's dismissal in the successive over of Muttiah Muralitharan.
However, Taylor kept scoring at one end and looked well settled to close the match but he misread a Jacob Oram (2-12) delivery to be caught behind by Dhoni.
They needed 17 runs from 12 balls when Praveen hit a six off Balaji with 12 runs coming in the 19th over.
Taylor was out to Oram's first ball in the final over but Vinay saw the team through.
Bangalore Royal Challengers took wickets at regular intervals to put pressure on the Super Kings. The one man, however, they failed to tame was Orange Cup holder Hayden. Hayden hammered yet another impressive knock of 60 off 38 balls which included five fours and three sixes.

Mumbai won by 8 wickets

The VIP boxes at Supersport Park gave an exact picture of what happened on the field in the match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab
The blue flags were all over the place, the red and white ones slowly kept disappearing. Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani sat in the dugout celebrating through the evening while Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia, co-owners of Kings XI, were hardly noticed anywhere around. It was a crucial encounter here that went in favour of Mumbai easily as West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo smashed a sizzling half-century to help his side easily chase a mere 120 runs. Sachin Tendulkar’s team won the match by eight wickets, thus climbing up the points table to share the fourth spot with Team Jaipur. Yuvraj Singh’s team, on the other hand, had only themselves to blame for a poor display batting first, going down to the sixth spot in the rankings. The last time these two teams met in this tournament, on April 29, Kings XI had scored exactly the same total as they did on Tuesday - 119 - and still won by three runs in a scintillating encounter. On Tuesday though, Bravo had other ideas and he spelt it out for all those who were expecting the Kings to get lucky again. The right-hander clubbed seven fours and three sixes in his knock of 70 and remained unbeaten as Mumbai romped home.

Bangalore won against kolkata

Ross Taylor guided the Royal Challengers to a stunning six-wicket victory over the hapless Kolkata Knight Riders, here on Tuesday. Ross Taylor smashed an unbeaten 81 runs as he sealed the royal win with a six. Brendon McCullum's valiant effort of 84 runs went in a losing cause as the Knight Riders failed to defend the target of 173 runs that they had set for the Royal Challengers.
McCullum opened the bowling with two of his best bowlers, Ishant Sharma and Ajantha Mendis. Jesse Ryder though had enough class to pull a delivery from Sharma over the deep backward square boundary for a four. The two bowled in perfect tandem till Ajit Agarkar was introduced into the attack. The Mumbai bowler promptly leaked two boundaries to Kallis, including one inside out shot for six over the extra cover area.

Ryder and Kallis motored along as they put forth a 50 run partnership in 6.5 overs. The pair ran hard and collected singles at every given opportunity. The opening partnership was broken by Murali Kartik. Kallis rocked onto the backfoot and hit his delivery towards McCullum, who leapt in the air to take a blistering catch. Kallis departed for a well made 32 runs. Ryder went to the dug out soon, scoring 22 runs, after he holed out to Saurav Ganguly at third man off the bowling of Agarkar. The Royal Challengers finished at a respectable 70 runs for the loss of two wickets at the end of the first ten overs.

Ryder's departure brought Robin Uthappa to the crease. He though did not last for long, caught in the deep by Angelo Matthews off a Kartik delivery. Ross Taylor howver put the foot down the accelerator as hit back to back sixes and fours off Kartik and Angelo Matthews, respectively. The New Zealander smashed a scintillating fifty in just 24 balls. Affter Dravid's fall for 12 runs, Mark Boucher came in and stepped up the run rate. Boucher took heavy toll of Ishant Sharma's over dispatching him for two fours and a six and that swung the match in Bangalore's favour. Ajit Agarkar was asked to bowl a crucial over but he only succeeded in letting his team down as Ross Taylor whacked two sixes as Challengers collected 16 runs of his over.

Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders were put into bat after Royal Challengers Bangalore Captain Anil Kumble won the toss and elected to field. The KKR innings was off to a poor start as Ganguly edged Vinay Kumar's delivery straight into the hands of wicket-keeper Boucher. He went after scoring just four runs. Further damage was done when Kumar got the wicket of Arindam Ghosh. At 21 for the loss of two wickets, David Hussey walked in played a stunning on-drive to the fence.

The rub of the green went the Knight Riders way as an edge from David Hussey fell short of Boucher, later on, Captain McCullum's edge went past the keeper again. In between these flying edges, David Hussey mis-hit two hits to the fence. the first one was six which went over the covers and then followed by a four which travelled over point. The Trans-Tasman duo pushed the run rate and the Knight Riders finished up with 69 runs at the end of the first ten overs. Speeding on at 8.40 runs per over in the last five overs.

David Hussey looked on song until he was castled by Balachandra Akhil's medium pace. Hussey played across the line trying to pull the ball for a boundary and could only end up to see his stumps shattered by a straight delivery. The Australian made 43 runs and stitched a partnership of 70 runs with the KKR skipper. McCullum pulled Akhil over wide backward square leg for a six and brought up his maiden IPL fifty.
McCullum attacked the Challenger's bowling with unsparing weapons. He took 15 runs of Vinay Kumar's over, scooping two boundaries over the fine leg region. He then went onto dismantle Jacques Kallis, pulling his no-ball full toss to backward square area and then guided a yorker for a boundary at the third man. The final ball of the Knight Riders innings was smacked for a six over the midwicket boundary. The Knight Riders finished with a total of 173 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets. Captain McCullum ended with an outstanding knock of 84 runs. With no hopes of making it to the finals, all the pressure on him had lifted, and it invariably reflected in his explosive innings

Mumbai won against Bangalore

Another defeat will bring their semi-final hopes crashing down, a desperate Mumbai Indians would settle for nothing less than victory in a crucial Indian Premier League match against Royal Challengers Bangalore here on Sunday.
While Mumbai Indians will be in search of an elusive win, the Royal Challengers will be eyeing a return to winning ways and move to the top half of the table.
With just three wins out of nine matches, the Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians are second from bottom in the eight-team event and would be eyeing revenge against the Royal Challengers, who humiliated them by 9 wickets in their earlier encounter.
The morale of the Mumbai outfit is at its lowest after losing three consecutive matches and from here on it would be a Herculean task for Tendulkar's boys to pick themselves up and set things right.
What has been a matter of concern for Mumbai is the batsmen's inability to put up decent totals on the board.
Boasting the likes of Sanath Jayasuriya, Tendulkar, JP Duminy and Dwayne Bravo, Mumbai would be eyeing a big score tomorrow but for that to happen, they will have to do away with their middle over blues.
Mumbai Indians bowling, however, looked impressive in all the outings so far.
Sri Lankan Lasith Malinga has been a force to reckon with and would be opening the attack with in-form Zaheer Khan, who is expected to return after missing the last two matches due to a shoulder injury.
Although off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has shone in patches, the part-time off-break's from Duminy has been far more effective.
The Royal Challengers, after a slow start, have started picking up steam and are in with a chance of making it to the semi-finals.
Despite the pounding they received at the hands of defending champions Rajasthan Royals, the Anil Kumble-led side are still fifth in the points but to make it to the last four stage they need to be consistent.
Under Kumble the Royal Challengers have become far more effective and the game against Mumbai Indians will provide the Vijay Mallaya-owned team prefect opportunity to shed the memory of the defeat against the Royals.
They do not boast of many big names but their success can be attributed to team effort.
Kumble will be looking towards Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, Robin Uthappa and Mark Boucher for runs, while he himself will be in charge of the bowling department. All in all an interesting battle is on the cards as two of Indian cricket's legendary figure - Tendulkar and Kumble - would be looking to get the better of each other.

Chennai VS Rajasthan

Chennai won by 7 wicket

Superb knocks by S Badrinath (unbeaten 59) and Matthew Hayden (48) helped last year runner-up Chennai Super Kings humble defending champion Rajasthan Royals by 7 wickets in a one-sided IPL encounter here on Saturday.Like most of the matches of IPL-II, Hayden, the highest run-getter of the tournament, got off to a flying start. He clobbered every Royals bowler with an equal disdain. His 44-ball knock consisted of 7 fours and a six.Though in-form Suresh Raina (13) and opener M Vijay (10) did not last long, Badrinath flourished in an elite company of Hayden. Surprisingly Badrinath, an otherwise defensive batsman, was more aggressive of the two, hitting 9 fours and a six during his 41-ball stay at the crease. It’s due to them that Chennai overhaul Rajasthan’s score comfortably with ten balls to spare.Though Rajasthan skipper Shane Warne tried his best to break the partnership, when he got Hayden in his net, it was too late as Chennai already cruised to 126, needing just 15 runs with 7 wickets in hand. The fate of the match had clearly been tilted at his opponents favour. Earlier, a disciplined bowling by their pacers and spinners helped Chennai Super Kings restrict Rajasthan Royals to a modest 140 for seven.Chennai bowlers used the slow track brilliantly as skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni shuffled them intelligently throughout the Royals innings.Graeme Smith (30), Swapnil Asnodkar (26) and Ravinder Jadeja (27) were the main contributors for the defending champions.Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan (2/22) and Shadab Jakati (2/35) took two wickets apiece, capitalising on a brilliant start provided by their pacers.Naman Ojha, who anchored Royals` last two wins, looked in hurry and paid the price. Without setting his eyes in, he went for a drive and was castled by Albie Morkel in the very first over of the match. The Chennai pacers bowled a tight line and gave away just 25 runs in the first five overs. Dhoni shuffled his bowlers quickly and by the eighth over, six different bowlers had come into the attack.Smith and Asnodkar slowly took their side to fifty-run mark, mostly scoring through ones and twos.

Muralitharan broke the 53-run partnership when he trapped Asnodkar. It could have been three wickets a few balls later had Sudeep Tyagi not dropped Smith at fine-leg just before the strategic break.Muralitharan sent back Smith when the South African captain dragged his feet out of the crease while attempting a sweep shot and Dhoni stumped him.Ravinder Jadeja hit Shadab Jakati for consecutive fours and Yusuf Pathan finished off the over with a massive six to begin the firework. However, both the batsmen departed while trying to press the accelerator button. First to go was Jadeja (27 off 19) who slashed one hard off Laxmipati Balaji but Suresh Raina took a brilliant low catch at point to send him back.Pathan (7) started his walk back after finding Jacob Oram on the edge of the boundary while trying to hit Jakati out of the park.Captain Shane Warne hit an unbeaten 11-ball 21 late in the end to take his side to near 150-run mark.

Punjab VS Hyderabad
Match date:- 09.05.2009

Punjab won by 3 wicket.

Despite having upper hands during most part of the match, Deccan Chargers had to suffer a 3-wicket defeat against Kings XI Punjab who excelled as a team here on Saturday. When Shoaib Ahmed removed Kumar Sangakkara (25) and Yuvraj Singh (18) in the 10th over of the Punjab innings to break the back of Kings XI Punjab middle-order many people have doubted that Punjab could win the match. Both the batsmen were playing well before throwing their wickets away at a time when they were going great guns with 85/2. They were playing with such an ease that the target of 169 was looking like a gettable score. But sudden rush of blood did them in.But former Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene played an important knock of 43 off just 28 balls with three huge sixes. It’s Jayawardene who kept the hopes alive for the Punjab outfit taking the close to victory. But he departed at 149, still needing 20 off 13 balls. Punjab needed an experienced customer at that time and they found the perfect man in Brett Lee who played a 10-ball 14 run knock under pressure to see his team through in the penultimate ball of the match.Chasing 169, Punjab started off reasonable well putting on 42 runs for the opening stand. Sunny Sohal started attacking R P Singh and Ryan Harris from the word go. But the hat-trick hero of the last match, Rohit Sharma removed him for a 17-ball 30 followed by his opening partner Simon Katich (9).Andrew Symonds played a gem of an innings of unbeaten 60 in his first match of IPL-II to help Deccan Chargers post a competitive 168/5, despite struggling in the early part of the innings, losing four wickets for 73.Symonds, during his 36-ball stay in the middle, took all the bowlers to the cleaners, muscling them for boundaries and over boundaries at will. He spared no Punjab bowler during his entertaining knock consisting of four huge sixes. He was particularly severe on erratic Indian pacer S Sreesanth (0/42), clobbered him for 20 runs in an over. Coming fresh from his ODI heroics against Pakistan after a long lay-off, Symonds immediately made an impact in the IPL, helping his team overcoming too much dependency on their famed opening pair of Gilchrist and Gibbs. He stitched a 95-run partnership with Venugopal Rao in no time. Rao also played a good supporting innings of 32 off 25 balls, getting ran-out off the last ball of the innings. For the Punjab, Brett Lee (1/24), also playing his first match IPL match of the year and Piyush Chawla (1/26) bowled well.
Though Gilchrist and Gibbs started off well, putting on 31 runs in 3.4 overs, they lost Gilchrist for 20. Sreesanth sent the retired Oz stumper packing. Then after some time Gibbs perished giving Chawla his only wicket of the match. T Suman, who has been playing well in the tournament, played another innings of 17-ball 27 with two sixes. Brett Lee, playing his first IPL match of this year, then got his first wicket in Rohit Sharma who could make only 9.
